ISSB: A Complete Guide to the Tests, Stages and How to Prepare

For most candidates hoping to become officers in the Pakistan Armed Forces, ISSB is the stage that decides everything — and the one they understand least. It is not a written exam. You cannot memorise your way through it. It is a multi-day assessment of who you are.

This guide explains what actually happens at ISSB, what is being assessed, and how to prepare in a way that genuinely helps.

What is ISSB?

The Inter Services Selection Board evaluates candidates for commissioned officer entry into the Pakistan Army, Air Force and Navy. Candidates are called to ISSB after clearing the initial written test and preliminary medical stages.

Testing takes place across several days at a designated ISSB centre, where candidates stay for the duration. You are observed continuously — not only during formal tests.

The main components

Screening

Held on the first day. Candidates who do not clear screening are sent home, so preparation must cover this stage rather than assume you will reach the later ones. Screening typically involves intelligence testing and a written exercise.

Psychological tests

A series of written and projective tests designed to build a picture of your personality, motivation and thinking patterns. These commonly include picture-based story writing, sentence completion and self-description exercises.

The most common mistake here is trying to produce the answer you think they want. Psychologists are experienced at spotting rehearsed responses, and inconsistency between your test responses and your behaviour elsewhere is itself a signal.

Group testing (GTO tasks)

Outdoor and indoor group exercises assessing how you function with others — group discussions, planning exercises, practical obstacle tasks and command situations. Assessors are watching leadership, cooperation, initiative and how you behave when a plan fails.

Candidates often assume dominating the group scores well. In practice, assessors are looking at whether the group achieves its task and what role you genuinely played in that.

Interview

A detailed personal interview covering your background, education, family, interests, current affairs and motivation for joining. Answers that conflict with your psychological test responses or your documented history are noticed.

Conference

At the end, the board reviews each candidate collectively before deciding on recommendation.

How to prepare

Understand the process first. Much of the anxiety around ISSB comes from not knowing what happens. Knowing the structure lets you focus on substance instead of surprises.

Work on genuine self-knowledge. You will be asked about yourself repeatedly, in different formats, across several days. Consistency comes from actually knowing your own answers — your strengths, your failures, why you want this — not from a script.

Build real fitness and stamina. Group tasks are physically demanding and run across long days.

Practise intelligence tests under time. Screening is timed and eliminates candidates immediately. This is the one component that rewards conventional practice.

Follow current affairs. Interview questions frequently touch on national and international events.

Do not rely on “recommended” answer keys. Material claiming to contain guaranteed responses circulates widely. Rehearsed answers are precisely what the assessment is designed to detect.
